New Flash Clients for Avalon and The Two Towers

I’ve been busy on the MUD client front lately with two new commissions from Avalon and The Two Towers.

These were quite different projects with Avalon wanting something similar to the client I did for Maiden Desmodus whereas The Two Towers had an existing javascript based web client they just wanted recreated in Flash for use on game portal sites.

Although the T2T client appears to be just a simple reskin, it was probably the more challenging project as I had to implement MXP !ELEMENT tag parsing which is something I’ve always avoided in the past when working with MXP.

You can see the T2T client up on Newgrounds (among other Flash game sites) and the Avalon client (named Lumiere) is now live on their site, although it’s not quite finished yet.

    nice work!

    Though I’m curious if you’ve been considering working on another game at all?

    Both look good, although T2T’s is a bit sparse for my tastes – I much prefer Avalon’s. Still, the MXP support has potential.

    Do you have any plans for improving the generic FMud client, perhaps adding MXP support to that as well? Or is the plan to leave the “free” version as a bare-bones client?

    @george

    Thanks, and yes coincidentally I’m just about to start work on something this week. I wouldn’t call it a MUD though, but KaVir probably would ;)

    @KaVir

    I liked the graphics on the T2T client (nothing to do with me though) but yes the Avalon one has a lot more information on it.

    I definitely plan to include MXP support of some sort in FMud when I next update it (which is long overdue really).

    I think MXP support would certainly make FMud more appealing, particularly if you included some of the more graphical options such as images, gauges and frames. Perhaps this would be a more generic way of offering the sort of customisable GUIs we’ve discussed in the past?

    Hi KaVir,
    I agree, MXP support would be wonderful, it would help those first time players that don’t have a desktop client get a more full experience of the mud they are logging in to.

    I just upgraded the 4D FMud from 0.7 to 0.92 today.

    Stay tuned then for MXP support (including images, context menus and gauges) in the next version!

    Any idea when we can expect to see the version with MXP? And will it be available through MudGamers, or only for download?

    Will it support out-of-band messages (MXP version 1.2)?

    I can put out a rough version tomorrow if people want to test it. I’ve added in a bunch of features but haven’t really had time to do any testing.

    It’ll be available for download here and I’ll also update the MudGamers client although it won’t be able to take advantage of some of the new features because they depend on customising the embedding page.

    No, I haven’t put in support for out-of-band MXP messages. The MXP support is only a limited subset of MXP as life is too short for a full implementation. It supports most of the common features in the most common ways that MUDs commonly implement them, I hope :)

    I’ve also added MSDP with callbacks to the embedding page which in theory should enable you to build a GUI around the client if you’re that way inclined (although I haven’t experimented with this at all).
